Move In

Moving into your newly built home is the day you have been dreaming of since you signed on the dotted line. After months of hard work and saving, the time has finally arrived for you to start making the move in your very own home. Here are our helpful tips and checklists to help make the moving transitions as smooth and seamless as possible.

4-6 Weeks Before the Move

• Book a firm date for moving and arrange time off work if possible.
• Decide whether you will move yourself, hire a truck and workers but do the packing yourself, or use a full service removalist company. Get quotes and book services. Buy packing boxes from a supplier or have a look for used packing boxes online.
• Begin advising organisations such as medical services, banks, schools of your change of address. Contact Australia Post about mail redirection and change of address services. (Refer to Change of Address Checklist below).
• Start to use all the food in your freezer and pantry items to reduce waste and the amount you need to move.
• Start your packing early. Start with rarely used items and work up to daily items as moving day approaches. Label boxes by item and room they will live in at your new home.
• Make a list of items you’ll need available for the moving day, so that you don’t pack something essential.
• This is a great time for a big clean out, so send-off old and unused items for recycling, charity or the tip.
• If you are arranging floor covering, window treatments or other finishing details for your new home yourself, finalise quote and book in suppliers now.

2 Weeks Before the Move

• Arrange for disconnection and reconnection of electricity, gas, telephone and water.
• Cancel newspapers, cleaning, gardening, or other local services, return library books.
• Begin cleaning up your present house for the next owners or tenants. Book cleaners if necessary and if renting arrange for carpet cleaners to come in after you have moved your furniture.
• Carry-out the ‘practical completion’ inspection with your builder at your new home. Examine all work closely and make sure you are happy that all work and standards outlined in your building contract have been met.

1 Week Before the Move

• Set aside bed linens, towels to be used on the first night so beds can be made up as soon as possible on moving day.
• Re-confirm all moving details with removalist and that they have your contact number, new address and clear detailed instructions.
• Arrange access and parking for the removalist\ truck.
• Defrost and clean your fridge and freezer the day before you move.
• Contact your new local council for garbage collection information and new residents’ folders.
• Collect your keys.

Moving Day Hints

• Have pets and children babysat, and arrange for a helpful friend or family member to bring you a ready-made meal at the end of the day.
• Pack a small box of items you’ll need for immediate use in your new home, including some toiletries, a change of clothes, and medicines.
• Pack another box with kitchen essentials for the move day such as a kettle, cutlery, mugs, tea, coffee and snacks.
• Turn off electricity at the meter at your old house.
• Check that all doors and windows are securely locked as you leave your old house.
• Keep your valuables, personal effects and important papers with you.
• Unpack bedding and make up beds as soon as possible.
• Decide where furniture will be placed before it makes it inside, you do not want to be moving heavy items more than once.

At Your New Home

• Try to stand at the removalist’s entry point and give clear directions as to furniture placement.
• If leasing, document condition of property and furnishings with the appropriate agent.
• Check all utilities are connected.
• At completion of unloading, check all is to your satisfaction.
• If move is from storage, interstate or overseas, check and sign the Inventory.
• Assemble beds and make up as soon as possible.
• Notify moving company immediately if anything is missing.
• Smile and say hello to your new neighbours
• Enjoy your new home.
