2020 Waitangi Day Celebration at Allara

On Sunday 2 February 2020 Allara came alive with the second annual Waitangi Day Festival at Kinkuna Park. Organised and delivered by the Kiwi Community Events and Celebrations Association Inc (KCEC) and supported by Allara development partners Satterley and DevelopmentWA, the community event was the only one of its kind in the northern coastal corridor.

KCEC are a newly formed association who established themselves after the inaugural 2019 Waitangi Day celebration in Kinkuna Park. This year the Waitangi Day was a huge success with over 700 people in attendance from Allara and the wider community and special guests including Mayor Tracey Roberts, Tina Hayden, Elders from Khaki Kaumatuas, Iwi Riders and Safe Men Safe Family.

After gaining funding from Allara Estate, the KCEC planned and organised a celebration in the heart of Allara that brings the Māori community together participating in a cultural festival and community-led celebration.

Kiwi Community Events and Celebrations Association Inc President, founding member and Allara resident, Emma Murdoch said ‘We could never have imagined a simple BBQ in Allara in 2019 would have transformed into such a big community celebration. The event was better than I could have imagined, rich with the Kiwi community celebrating Waitangi Day with locals. Our committee has worked really hard to deliver such a successful event and we couldn’t be prouder of the final result! Thank you to event sponsors Allara Estate, City of Wanneroo, Plus Fitness Alkimos and Coles Brighton for their support.’

Cultural performances with bands, solo artists and a Haka performance ran throughout the day. Over eight local cultural stalls showcased their products and services including carvings, clothing, church group live podcast, local rugby clubs and the NRL. Over nine islander food vendors kept attendees fed and watered with delicious traditional dan modern delicacies.

The Allara Grants Program has been put to good use with this fantastic community event. Emma and her team have worked tirelessly to showcase their culture to the wider WA community and we have enjoyed seeing the KCEC’s hard work pay off. Bringing the community together and celebrating different cultures is what Allara is all about and I’ve loved participating in the day. Next year is set to be bigger than this year thanks to the community support so I’m excited to see what 2021 has in store!’ Comments Allara Community Development Coordinator, Katie Dixon.
