Dragon scale: new park to feature sculpture of epic proportions

Work on Arcadia’s ‘Dragon Park’, the playground at the centre of a new one-hectare green space, has officially begun.

Last year we revealed that the all-abilities playground will feature a custom-made dragon’s head, a climbable dragon’s body and dragon’s eggs. It gained a lot of attention on social media and we know our community is really excited about the project, so we want to give you an update.

We can now tell you that Agency of Sculpture, the award-winning design and fabrication company who’ll create the dragon, is well underway on bringing the playground to life.

They’ve told us the sculpture will end up weighing around 25 tonnes (that’s the same weight as a garbage truck or four large elephants!). It will require 2 kilometres of welding and 150 hours of plasma cutting.

In February, Cardinia Shire Council officially approved the project, which meant that earthworks could begin. The next stage will be landscaping, and our partners Urban Development Landscapers will get started towards the end of winter.

The playground, which has been designed by Outlines Landscape Architecture, will accommodate children of all abilities and ages. The design will include elements of sound and texture, as well as swinging apparatus, a motion carousel, and other interactive items.

We plan to have the park ready for families to enjoy by early 2021.
