Community initiative creates a memorable Waitangi Day at Allara

On Saturday 2 February 2019 Allara Resident Emma Murdoch celebrated Waitangi Day with locals and the broader community. Waitangi Day is the national day of New Zealand, commemorating the signing, on 6 February 1840, of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Together with fellow community group ‘The Kiwi Community Team,’ Emma applied for Allara’s Community Grant and received $2,000 funding to support her vision for the event. The day featured traditional New Zealand food stalls and community products sharing the joys of New Zealander culture with Allara residents. Over 700 people joined the celebration, some traveling from as far afield as Rockingham to experience Waitangi Day at Allara!

The event bought together people from multicultural backgrounds to see a wonderful New Zealand tradition unfold. Emma and The Kiwi Community Team organised activities for children to participate in as well as the opportunity for local business to promote their products and services.

Traditional New Zealander performances took place throughout the day creating a vibrant atmosphere for Allara and the wider community to enjoy.

‘(We) wanted to take the time to personally thank you for your sponsorship of our Waitangi Day celebration. Without your support, the day might not have been as successful. We really appreciated it, and we hope to have our support moving forward. The day was a huge success, and everyone had a brilliant time’ wrote The Kiwi Community Team in thanks to Allara Estate.

Allara Estate created the Community Grants initiative to support events like Emma’s within the community. The Community Grants Program provides the opportunity for groups and organisations to apply for funding to support community events, activities, and projects or to purchase vital equipment.  This Community Grants Program is part of Allara’s commitment to help the community grow and become self-sustainable over time.

Thank you again to Emma and The Kiwi Community Group for organising such an enjoyable day for all!
