Feeling bookish? Check out Wyndham's public library network

Are you one of those people who thinks libraries are just as important as the local coffee shop? Or was the last time you stepped foot in a library during your primary school days?

If it’s been a while, you’ll be pleased to know that most council-run libraries aren’t the musty old book rooms they were 30 or 40 years ago. There’s still a huge selection of physical books to borrow – novels, graphic novels, non-fiction, young adult fiction, children’s books, picture books, and more – but there’s also free access to more-than-handy digital technology.

At Wyndham’s libraries, for example, members can connect to free wireless internet, get onto a desktop PC, use a free scanner or even borrow e-books – they’re books you can download to your computer (at no cost) and don’t need to physically return; they simply expire after a fortnight.

Free iMacs with Creative Suite are also available at Point Cook and Wyndham Vale, while genealogy computers (for looking up information on your family history) are available at the Plaza Library in Werribee.

There are five public libraries in the City of Wyndham.

1. Point Cook Library

As the name hints, this is the closest library for residents of Upper Point Cook (although Plaza Library, below, is also within easy reach). As a member, you’ll have access to one of 10 internet PCs, an IT learning room, one of two iMacs with creative design software and two gaming consoles – a Wii and a Play Station 3.

2. Julia Gillard Library

Tarneit The district’s newest library, the Julia Gillard Library is the closest one for residents of Habitat on Davis Creek. If you’re a member, you can enjoy one of 24 free PCs, a group study room, a silent study room and a co-working space.

4. Werribee Library

ADDRESS: Wyndham Cultural Centre, 177 Watton St, Werribee, 3030 PHONE: (03) 9742 7999

5. Wyndham Vale Library

On the western outskirts of this fast-growing area is Wyndham Vale Library, with its 12 desktop computers, fully equipped IT room, two creative design iMacs, Wii and Play Station 3 – all available to members.

ADDRESS: 86 Manor Lakes Blvd, Manor Lakes, 3030 PHONE: (03) 8734 8930

You can find out more about the libraries, joining as a member (you don’t join a single library; you join the network and get access to all five) and much more by visiting the Wyndham libraries website, by taking a look at their quick overview brochure or by contacting the libraries individually on the numbers above. Happy reading!
