Heron Park Youth and Skate Park Opening Event: 20 March 2020

On Friday, 20 March 2020 Heron Park Estate will be opening the much anticipated Youth Park on Barossa Loop, Harrisdale, with a 'Park it Up!' event.

The park will be bumping with activity between 4pm and 7pm, so locals and visitors alike are invited to come and join the fun! Check out some awesome skate demos from the pros at Skateboarding WA, shoot some hoops with former Perth Wildcats and Sydney Kings player, Kyle Armour, or bust some moves and learn some hip-hop grooves, steps and freezes with Breakin’ Traditions. Those feeling less active will be able to sit back and enjoy some live beats or try their luck with various competitions and prizes happening over the afternoon! We'll also have your Friday dinner sorted with food available for purchase.

For all the event details follow the event on Facebook.

The Youth Park completes the extensive network of outdoor spaces in Heron Park and was built specifically for the growing number of tweens and teenagers in the Harrisdale area. What makes this new park special is that is has been designed by youth, for youth.

When looking at what to put in the estate's final park, an early focus group with staff and parents at Harrisdale Primary and Harrisdale Senior High Schools identified that there were many places in the area suitable for toddlers and younger children, but that was little for the older age groups. Subsequent to this, two workshops were held with students at Harrisdale Senior High School to gain feedback and ideas on the design of the skate elements. Neighbours to the park were also surveyed to see what sort of features they'd use most on their doorstep.

In working together with Heron Park on this community consultation, Perth-based skateboarding design and construction specialists, Skate Sculpture, were able to bring students' ideas to reality, incorporating over 80% of items on the student working group's wish list including a half-pipe and an A-frame.

In addition to the skate zone, the Youth Park also features a half-court basketball/netball surface, kick about space, pump track and an 'eagles nest' climbing look-out. The staples such as shaded picnic shelters and barbeques make it a great place for social get-togethers on weekends or after work.

'A lot of work has gone in behind the scenes to make sure that the Heron Park Youth Park is somewhere where young people and their families are going to want to spend time," said Satterley Community Development Coordinator, Meredyth Morgan.

"It's a great addition to the estate as the final park, and I'm sure it will be popular amongst our young residents and the broader community," she said.

Join the team at Heron Park at 'Park it Up!' on Friday, 20 March 2020 from 4pm - 7pm. For all the event details follow the event on Facebook.

Please note, there will be no parking at the event location so skate, bike or scooter there! ACROD permit holders excepted.
