Street food, free cartoon night and more in this summer's Heron Park must-do list

The school holidays are nearly upon us and the daunting task of filling our little ones (or not so little ones!) days with fun, educational, energy-zapping activities begins. Not only does the task of finding and planning these activities seem somewhat overwhelming, but without careful planning, the school holidays can be costly too! 

Living at Heron Park means there’s so much to see and do, without spending a small fortune throughout the Summer. Heron Park is an ideal location for families due to its parks and playgrounds close by, including two treehouses, an obstacle course, BBQ and picnic facilities all within the thriving community to enjoy. There’s also a skate park coming soon, which will add even more enjoyment for youngsters in the local area. Added to this, Heron Park is home to two state-of-the-art schools and conveniently located to many shops including Aldi and Woolworths. It really is the perfect family location! 

We’ve put together 10 activities that you can do with the family to keep everyone entertained without breaking the bank these school holidays!

1) Enjoy the parks & playgrounds at Heron Park

Heron Park is home to 11 different parks and playgrounds to explore this Summer. Complete with an adventure playground including treehouses, a suspension bridge and an obstacle course there is so much your kids will enjoy! After a morning of adventure, enjoy a picnic or BBQ under the shady trees.

2) Invite friends over for a Summer BBQ 

The warm weather is a great excuse to fire up your BBQ and enjoy some fresh, delicious WA produce. Invite over friends or a playdate or two to keep your kids entertained. Splash out on some water balloons, like these, for the kids to have fun and cool off in the garden! 

3) Head to Armadale Library for a Cartooning Session

Armadale Library is a popular choice for locals for special events and a great place to enjoy with the family. This January, Armadale Library hosting a Cartooning workshop where youngsters can create their own cartoon characters, animals and monsters and enjoy an afternoon of creative fun! It’s a free session, but be quick we suspect it may be popular!

4) Enjoy an Evening of Street Food 

Every Wednesday Heron Park hosts a selection of Perth’s best street food trucks with different cuisines available each week to sample. It’s a great event to try new foods and enjoy an evening with your neighbours in the local area. Head to Street Food Circus on Facebook to keep up to date with all the news!

5) Invite your Neighbours over for drinks and nibbles

Moving somewhere new can be daunting, especially if you don’t know many people in the local area. Heron Park has a great community atmosphere to embrace. Host a potluck lunch and invite your neighbours over for a few drinks to get to know them. Ask them to bring the family and a dish to enjoy together in your home's new back yard.

6) Hold a Mini Bake-Off

Baking can be a great and fun way to engage everyone in the family, even from an early age. How about helping the kids to bake and decorate their favourite flavour of cupcakes and make yourself the judge? Try one of these simple recipes. You’ll also have baked treats to enjoy for weeks to come. 

7) Take a wander around Forrestdale Lake

Forrestdale Lake is just a short drive away from Heron Park and a great place to get active and enjoy a walk or bike ride with the family. Bring some snacks and drinks with you to enjoy a day out in the local area enjoying the picturesque views and everything nature has to offer! 

8) Visit the History House Museum

The History House Museum in Armadale details the events that shaped the city from 1830 to today and is a great place for the kids to learn about the history of their local area with a number of objects to see that offer an insight into this history. It’s free to enter and open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday so a perfect place for the school holidays! 

9) Enjoy a Family Pizza Night

Cooking together as a family can be a great way to make special memories right at home. Grab some pizza bases or wraps and let the kids add their own toppings and enjoy a pizza the way they want it, pop on a family film and enjoy some quality time together during the holidays. 

10) Visit Canning Dam

Canning Dam is just a short drive from Heron Park and is ideal for a summer day out featuring BBQs, picnic areas and a children’s playground. With walking trails around the dam and a viewing platform, it’s a great place to see something different and enjoy WA’s history.
