It’s academic! Schools (and other education options) around True North

For families looking to buy property, the location of the land is invariably as important as the home itself. And while proximity to shops, transport and green spaces is always important, closeness to schools (built, under construction or planned) often ranks higher on the list of priorities than anything else.

As Melbourne’s population increases faster than most other cities in Australia, so too does its number of students. In fact, the Victorian Department of Education and Training estimates that close to 100,000 extra students will enter public schools over the next five years.

While the Victorian Government is delivering upgrades and hundreds of brand new schools in growth areas, competition within sought-after school zones will only intensify in coming years, so it’s never been more important to have well-regarded education nearby.

In this article, we’ll give you a summary of the early childhood, primary and secondary school choices available near True North.

Kolbe Catholic College

True North has a strong relationship with Kolbe Catholic College (you may have seen our profile of the schools’ principal in our newsletter a few issues back). It’s a co-educational school for children from Years 7 to 12.

It’s next door to True North’s Greenvale neighbourhood, along Lysterfield Drive, so students can walk from the community to school.

Roxburgh Park Primary School

This school has grown to almost 500 students since it opened with a student population of just 180 nearly 20 years ago.

Facilities include a library, art room, multi-purpose room, a full-sized gymnasium, basketball courts, music room and a canteen.

It’s less than a 10 minute car ride from True North, and the 541 bus is a handy option, also.

Roxburgh Park College

This large secondary college is home to around 1400 students. Between Years 10 and 12 the school offers VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education), VET (Vocational Education and Training) and VCAL (the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) studies. Not only did 51% of its most recent graduating students receive university offers, but the remaining group either went on to TAFE studies or found employment after school.

It’s five minutes away by car, and easily accessible via bus route 541.

Craigieburn Secondary College

Craigieburn Secondary describes itself as being “small enough to care for and pay close attention to the individual, yet big enough to offer a diverse range of pathways, programs and facilities”.

It features a modern performing arts centre, design and technology studios, video conferencing facilities, as well as a trade training centre incorporating an industrial kitchen.

It’s about 10 minutes from True North by car.

Greenvale Primary School

More than 150 years old, Greenvale Primary moved to its current location in 1988 and now has enough space to accommodate just under 800 students.

The school offers Reading Intervention and Buddy Reading programs, a program for Students with Disabilities, an English as an Additional Language program, a 1:1 tablet program for all students from Years 4 to 6, as well as specialist programs like physical education, performing arts, visual arts and Italian.

Aitken College

This Uniting Church school welcomes students – boys and girls – from Prep all the way through to Year 12. It describes its campus as being set out like a “small village”, with plazas, streets and even “classrooms that have the appearance of domestic houses”.

A new Kitchen Garden Centre opened in early 2019, accompanying the existing Food Studies Centre.

The school is on the opposite side of the Greenvale Reservoir from True North, approximately a 15-minute drive away.
