Places to hang out with friends near Heron Park: skate parks and outdoor cinemas

There are many things to do in your free time when you choose to call Heron Park home. Not only are all the amenities your family needs close by including schools, medical care, shopping precincts and more, there are also a range of activities to enjoy in the evenings and at the weekend. The Heron Park Youth Park, Outdoor Cinema, Fremantle Youth Plaza, Police Rangers Program and Youth Festival are a few suggestions we love!

Explore more and choose your favourite to put on the agenda this weekend.

1) Adventure to the Heron Park Youth Park

After consulting Heron Park residents, including a cohort of local school students, The Heron Park Youth Park opens in March 2020. The Youth Park completes the extensive network of outdoor spaces in Heron Park and was built specifically for the growing number of tweens and teenagers in the Harrisdale area. Alongside a dedicated skate zone, the Youth Park features a half-court basketball/netball surface, kick about space, pump track and an 'eagles nest' climbing look-out as well as shaded picnic shelters and barbeques.

2) Outdoor cinema spectacular

Who doesn’t love an evening under the stars with your favourite snacks and great company? We certainly do. Heron Park is located close to a range of outdoor movie spots the whole family can enjoy.

Some of our favourite cinema destinations include Kings Park Moonlight Cinemas, Rooftop Movies in Northbridge, Telethon Community Cinemas in Burswood and Perth Openair Cinema in East Perth.

3) Explore Fremantle Youth Plaza

Located at Fremantle’s Esplanade Reserve is the Fremantle Youth Plaza, designed to be an inner-city hub for families and young people to spend their free time.

Skateboarders, BMX and scooter riders are often spotted here along with those who enjoy parkour! The Fremantle Esplanade is WA’s first outdoor parkour park, so if you or your tweens are adrenaline junkies - head here!

Adjacent to the park is a range of cafes, restaurants and a coastal walk to enjoy including Bathers Beach House, Little Creatures and more WA favourites.

4) Join the Police

Join the Police… Rangers Program, that is. The Cecil Andrews Police Rangers program is open to all youth 12-17 years old in the Harrisdale and wider Armadale area, meeting every Wednesday from 6 till 9 pm at Cecil Andrews Senior High School. The program teaches a variety of fun and practical for teens and tweens including; knots and navigation, bush survival, road awareness, basic bike repairs, cultural activities, developing leadership skills and more.

5) Experiment with arts and crafts

Propel Youth Arts WA has a range of events and activates across Perth for you or your teen to get involved with. In celebration of Tough Week from 17 - 24 April 2020, Propel Youth Arts WA are sharing a range of events including ‘Get to know FRINGE WORLD Festival’ at the Library Theatre, State Library of WA where insight will be shared about one of Perth’s largest and more successful events and career pathways. Their events are free, but often book out well in advance so keep an eye on their website and event bright for upcoming free workshops and activities close to you at Heron Park.
