Think Green this Christmas at Allara

Christmas is one of the most exciting times of the year, but it’s also a time when the sustainability initiatives we have implemented throughout the year can often go adrift. Wrapping paper, buying new gifts, excessive packaging, high electricity usage and so much more are all factors that deter us from continuing our mission to be greener!

Below we share five tips and tricks to help you stay on track and to have a more sustainable Christmas this year.

Shop locally

By choosing gifts made by local businesses you will be supporting families in your neighbourhood. Explore local Christmas markets, fairs and events to purchase your Christmas gifts. Not only will you find something personal and thoughtful, but you will also save on expensive parking, travel costs and fuel usage. Your Christmas budget spends will also be reinvested back into your local community.

Switch to eco-friendly paper

Wrap your gifts vintage style with eco-friendly brown paper or leftover magazines and newspapers. The comic strip in the paper can make great wrapping while ensuring we reuse existing materials already in circulation! Use string to wrap instead of sticky tape and your gift is looking even greener!

Reduce and reuse

Decorating your home for Christmas can be expensive! Instead of buying new decorations every year, reuse the ones you had last year and add a couple of new additions to give your tree a new colour or flare. Charity shops can sell a variety of decorations that are barely used and in great condition for your home. You’ll save money too!

Cut down on food waste

We spend so much on food and drink over Christmas and often have delicious leftovers that go to waste! Clear out your freezer ahead of time and invest in some reusable containers you can store leftovers in for the coming days and weeks. If you know of someone living nearby on their own, pop by with some tasty leftovers for them to enjoy too! Why let your hard work go to waste?

Go digital

E-cards and gift cards are on the rise! If you have friends or family overseas why not tree and e-card this Christmas. Often personalised with lots of funny options, e-cards cut down on paper waste, postage and transport costs. And who doesn't love a gift card to choose their own gift? It sounds like a winner to us!

How do you stay green over Christmas? We’d love to hear your go-to solutions to think about reducing, reusing and recycling. Share your ideas on the Allara Facebook page.
