Why Townhomes are Becoming A Popular Choice in Melbourne

Townhomes a popular choice in Melbourne

It almost goes without saying that today’s generation of home buyers is approaching the property market with a totally new mindset in comparison to the generations that came before it. Size of land, cost and smaller families are just some of the factors influencing their decisions. And builders are responding with more affordable options, turnkey homes – those that are built ready for a buyer to move straight in.

We spoke with two of Victoria’s leading builders – and one of their buyers – about what makes a townhome such an enticing option in today’s market.

Oscar Stanley is the General Manager of Development at ABN Group Victoria, the owners of Homebuyers Centre. He says that in his experience buyers love the level of inclusions they receive with their Highline Range, including Westinghouse appliances, the high quality floor-coverings and the overhead cupboards.

David Richardson is the Planning and Design Manager for TownLiving by Metricon. He believes that over 40 years Metricon has developed a reputation for designing affordable and liveable homes and that the TownLiving range by Metricon continues in that vein.

He says that the townhomes Metricon have built at Arcadia are definitely not designed to just tick a box.

“These designs have some flexibility in creating a family home and can give buyers choices to suit their needs. If you have three kids you can select an option of a fourth bedroom, which is pretty much unheard of in the medium density market,” he says.

One of the key objectives was to create a design with some of the benefits of a family home, which includes a secondary living space perfect for kids and parents. The TownLiving’s Chelsea 4 has a full laundry, large ensuite shower, study nook and when you walk in there’s a big cathedral ceiling creating space and light which is often lost in townhomes, especially over staircases.”

Richardson and Stanley agree that one of the great attractions of a townhome is, as Richardson suggests, “what you see is what you get – with no hidden costs”.

Stanley says that this is important because it relieves the stress of numerous choices and expenses. “Our standard inclusions like air-conditioning, downlights, front and rear landscaping, letterbox and fencing are included in the package price, giving the purchaser more time to focus on the fun stuff like homewares and furniture inspiration,” Stanley says.

Melissa Dawson, who signed an Expression of Interest with Homebuyers Centre in January 2018, was full of excitement when they hit the market at Arcadia almost a year later.

She decided Officer was the place for her family when she realised how close it was to public transport, the local secondary school and a future on-off ramp to the Monash Freeway.

She settled on the threebedroom Etto 21 by Homebuyers Centre and says it will complement her lifestyle ideally.

I’m a busy mum who works and I don’t have a lot of time for backyard maintenance. So the layout, with minimal garden, but a nice outdoor entertaining space upstairs, was really appealing to me,” Melissa says. “Space-wise it’s perfect for my lifestyle. I picked the Etto 21 because it was the largest one and price-wise it was good value for money.”

Melissa says she can’t wait to move in to her new home in 2020.
